Becoming an animal portraitist was an accident. Wishing to have a picture of a horse to hang in her cottage, Ann borrowed her father's watercolour box and set about copying a photograph of a famous stallion. This was duly hung, but not for long. A visiting friend took a liking to the study, and purchased it. Ann set about painting a study of another stallion to fill the gap, which was again purchased by another friend. A love of animals and the countryside gave her an intimate knowledge and perception, which proved invaluable as her artistic skills developed. Ann was now accepting commissions for horses, dogs and other animals from friends, when she was accepted by the CLA to take a trade stand at their 1979 Game Fair at Bowood. This resulted in sufficient commissions for her to leave the family firm and to set out on a full-time career as an animal portraitist.
